Missile defense purchase from Russia indicative of diplomatic and security shift.
Veto powers have been quietly exercised by the chairmen and ranking members of the House Foreign Affairs and the Senate Foreign Relations Committees to halt the sale of arms to Turkey for over a year. Turkey recently acquired the S-400 missle defense system from Russia, indicating the growing relationship between those two nations and deepening the rift between Turkey and the U.S.
“There is serious concern over [Turkey’s purchase of the missile system] in both parties and in both chambers on the Hill, and until the issues surrounding this purchase are resolved I cannot and will not support weapon sales to Turkey,” said Jim Risch of Idaho, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman.
“Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 is unacceptable and undermines NATO’s mission to deter Russian aggression,” declared Representative Michael McCaul of Texas of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
